OUR 6th Annual VES CLAMBOREE
Saturday, AUG. 10, 2013
The best fun- and food-filled event of the summer is scheduled to be held this year at The Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club in Melfa. Regardless of the weather, we'll be comfortable indoors, while schmoozing and dining along the scenic shores of Pungoteague Creek. As in the past, we'll still feature home-grown clams (supplied by Cherrystone Aqua Farms and H. M. Terry and expertly steamed by Ron Crumb), plus barbecued pork and chicken, and all the fixins, including dessert. Plus, we'll have bar service and musical entertainment by Moonstruck Music, featuring the wonderful duo of Malcolm and Carol Russ. Dinner tickets are limited and cost $35 in advance, $45 at the door. Advance tickets are available through the end of business on Friday, August 9, from Rayfield's Pharmacy in Nassawadox and the Book Bin in Onley.
Order tickets in advance directly from us. We'll hold your tickets at the door, rather than incur the extra expense (and wasted paper) of sending them to you.
During the evening we'll have the second presentation of our Waterway Guardian Awards, plus some terrific items to be auctioned off.

Great Silent Auction Items
The 2013 Clamboree will feature a silent auction of the following outstanding items:
Carving of a shorebird or duck by renowned Eastern Shore master carver Mark McNair.
Internationally known and acclaimed carver Mark McNair of Craddockville will have either a shorebird or duck decoy carving to highlight a great lineup of silent auction items. Mark is one of today's premier contemporary carvers, known for both his style and painting techniques, and for making his new decoys sport a patina that looks like they're a century old. Mark is shown below with his son Ian, hunting doves; also pictured is an old squaw decoy he carved, which is currently available through Raven's Way Antiques.

On-site original artwork by the renowned Onancock artist Willie Crockett.
Willie will bring his easel, tools, and paint to create a unique watercolor at the Clamboree. He's done this before at other Eastern Shore functions and it's always one of the highlights of the evening. Below is a typical rendition of a local water scene, Crockett style.
A miniature carving of a black skimmer by Eastern Shore master carver Billy Crockett.
Son of the aforementioned artist, and a popular carver, Billy does lifesize and miniature (roughly 5 inch-long) carvings of ducks, shorebirds, fish, and more. Billy has placed first in shorebirds in the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition, and is shown below with one of his works.
Speckled trout woodburning by Accomac artist Sandra Schultz.
Sandra's woodburning of a striped bass (rockfish) on cedar was a popular and coveted item at last year's Clamboree, and is shown in the photo below. Recent woodburnings that were auctioned at the Eastern Shore Land Trust and Eastern Shore Anglers Club banquets were very well received. This year, she's produced a cedar woodburning of another of the area's most popular gamefish.
One-of-a-kind wooden duck decoy by Grover Lafferty.
Born and raised in Cheriton, Grover Lafferty has carved working and decorative decoys and other wildfowl for decades, evidently getting his talents from his grandfather, a carver as well as a hunting guide and cook for the Cobb Island Hunting Club nearly a century ago. Grover recently carved a swan that was auctioned at the Relay for Life cancer event. His hen mallard decoy, shown below, was donated by Vic Schmidt.
Round of Golf for 4 at Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club.
Enjoy a round of golf for four people, with carts, at the private Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club in Melfa. The 18-hole par 70 course can be deceptively challenging, but fun for all ages and levels of play. New "family-friendly" tees make it the premier course on the lower eastern Shore. The course is playable almost all year, weather permitting.
Round of Golf for 4 at Bay Creek Resort & Club.
Enjoy a round of golf for four people, with carts, at the private, and deluxe, Bay Creek Resort & Club in Cape Charles. Bay Creek has two signature golf courses, one designed by Arnold Palmer, the other by Jack Nicklaus, plus phenomenal views of lower Chesapeake Bay. The Nicklaus course is a shotmaker's challenge, while the Palmer championship course has five strategically placed sets of tees for golfers of all skill levels.
Sabine fishing kayak from Coastal Kayaks and Southeast Expeditions.
This new model from Coastal Kayaks is a 9 1/2-footer designed primarily for fishing, but suitable for general recreational use. It's pictured here off Cape Charles (just kidding - the Shorekeeper is working to keep our waterways pure and clean but they will never look like the Caribbean!).
Frank Benson original etching, plus book Frank W. Benson: Etchings, Drypoints, Lithographs, and Prints.
A renowned American impressionist, Frank W. Benson was also a master of the sporting print. This item is one of his original etchings, and is quite valuable in its own right, but comes with the book, a collector's item authored by VES President Jack Ordeman. Jack graciously donated both to the Shorekeeper, and his book is shown in the photo below.
Mosaic Side Table from New Ravenna Mosaics.
A premier designer and manufacturer of mosaics, New Ravenna handcrafts its products into custom works of art. Based in Exmore, the company's products have been featured in national architectural and interior design magazines.
Eastern Shore Hang Gliding Adventure for One
Departing from Campbell Field Airport in Weirwood, this is a wonderful opportunity to "Soar the Shore" with the Eastern Shore Hang Gliding Center. The lucky bidder will get to enjoy an aerotow hang gliding adventure. There's no jumping off a cliff (what cliff is there on the Eastern Shore?), as you and your instructor will be strapped into a glider that is lifted to the desired altitude. No experience is necessary. You just have to be 4 years old or more, and able to fly before the end of October.
We'll post more info on the 2013 event as it gets closer. This is our only fundraiser and we've had great support from Eastern Shore supporters in the past, as evidenced by the photos below. Put the Aug. 10th Clamboree on your calendar. Better yet, order your ticket now
Thanks to the following 2013 Clamboree donors who help make this event a success: Southeast Expeditions, Cherrystone Aqua Farms, H.M. Terry, Jack Ordeman, Sandra Schultz, Vic Schmidt, Billy Crockett, New Ravenna Mosaics, Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club, Willie Crockett, Bay Creek Resort & Club, and Eastern Shore Hang Gliding Center.
