Perfect for prowling the nearly 1,400 miles of shallow tidal shoreline on the
Eastern Shore of Virginia, our 22-foot KenCraft Bay Rider
is used by the Shorekeeper for patrolling creeks, bays, and coastal areas;
for cleanup efforts; for investigating citizen complaints; for conducting
ongoing water monitoring activities; and for derelict crabpot removal.
The shallow draft
hull design of the Bay Rider is well suited to the shallow waters around the
Eastern Shore, and the Yamaha 115 horsepower 4-stroke outboard allows
cost-effective, environmentally friendly operation.
The boat was
purchased in 2004 from Sandpiper Marine in Accomac, with funds provided from
the Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment, and other contributors.
Located in Wilson, North Carolina, KenCraft generously waived some optional
manufacturing fees, and Sandpiper Marine custom-rigged the boat to our exact specifications,
further reducing the cost of the boat.
The Keith Campbell
Foundation for the Environment supports habitat restoration, and environmental
education and advocacy around Chesapeake Bay, and was instrumental in
supporting the Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper’s efforts to become fully
operational in 2003-2004. The Foundation’s generous support allowed VES to begin
and continue “on the water” work to protect the Eastern Shore.
